OIDJ Day 3: Field Trips & Brainstorms

We took our first field trip of the week to The Oklahoman, where we not only took away a free newspaper (not like they're expensive to begin with, but still), but we also took away many helpful tips from some reporters while we were there. One of the lessons we learned is just how important it is to stay objective, but also the importance of not becoming a robot that feels nothing. You can still have feelings towards a subject, and that's alright. However, we also have to remember that we aren't writing for ourselves, but rather for the people who are relying on us to deliver the news and allow them to make their own opinions.

Moving onto something a little bit lighter and not so philosophic, we all brainstormed different ideas for the stories we have to write for the week. I actually got to do the original story that I wanted over the Farmer's Market right here in Norman, with the angle of how the local farmer's try and compete with supermarkets. The topic of the Norman Farmer's Market also prompted another story idea involving a small grocery store that has been in town for many years is now shutting down. The angle for that is possibly a profile on the store's owner and why it's shutting down. I guess I will find out my angle when I do some more research.
